Applications Open for the 3rd Global MAB Youth Forum 2026 in Italy

The UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme has officially opened applications for the 3rd Global MAB Youth Forum 2026, a landmark event designed to empower young leaders connected to biosphere reserves worldwide.

Scheduled to take place from 18 to 22 May 2026 at the Po Delta Biosphere Reserve in Italy, the Forum will bring together up to 200 young participants for an in-person exchange focused on shaping the future of sustainable development.

A Milestone for Youth Leadership

The third edition of the Global MAB Youth Forum represents a major step in strengthening youth engagement within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The Forum aims to empower participants to:

  • Shape the next decade of action within the MAB Programme
  • Develop innovative solutions to address biodiversity loss and climate change
  • Strengthen youth governance and leadership
  • Transform ideas into concrete, youth-led initiatives

The event builds on the momentum of previous youth consultations and mapping surveys, turning youth perspectives into tangible actions and policy recommendations.


Who Can Apply?

Applications are open to young people aged 18 to 35 who are actively connected to UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. This includes those who:

  • Live in biosphere reserves
  • Work or study there
  • Conduct research
  • Volunteer
  • Support biosphere-related activities

Two Ways to Participate

1. National MAB Youth Focal Points

Officially designated National MAB Youth Focal Points may apply as representatives through a non-competitive process, subject to documentation requirements.

2. Open Call for MAB Youth Participants

Young leaders can apply through a competitive selection process based on:

  • Merit
  • Geographical balance
  • Gender equality

What Selected Participants Will Receive

Participants will benefit from:

  • Accommodation and meals during the Forum
  • Limited travel support (subject to eligibility)
  • A unique opportunity to contribute to global youth recommendations influencing MAB governance

A Call to Support Youth Participation

UNESCO encourages partners, institutions, and networks to:

  • Share this opportunity widely with eligible youth
  • Encourage National MAB Youth Focal Points to apply
  • Promote diverse and inclusive participation
