UNESCO Beirut congratulates Lebanon and the Lebanese Center for Water and Environment (LCWE) on the recognition of the Al Maydaneh Plain Wetland, located between Kfar Roumman, Jarmak and Aaychiyeh in South Lebanon, as a UNESCO Ecohydrology Demonstration Site. This achievement reflects the important scientific work, field surveys, and Living Labs implemented by LCWE and marks Lebanon’s inclusion in the Global UNESCO Ecohydrology Network. The designation enhances the international visibility of the site and creates opportunities for scientific cooperation, partnerships, and future resource mobilization.

Building on this success, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) has launched the 2026 Call for New Ecohydrology Demonstration Sites, open until 31 August 2026.
The call is open to members of the UNESCO Water Family and partners, including research institutes, universities, government entities, scientific organizations, NGOs, water experts, and UNESCO designated sites. Eligible initiatives should demonstrate the application of ecohydrological principles and nature-based solutions, promote transdisciplinary research, involve multiple stakeholders and local communities, and benefit from appropriate coordination and support mechanisms.
UNESCO encourages interested institutions and experts in Lebanon and the Arab region to submit their applications and contribute to advancing innovative and science-based solutions for sustainable water and ecosystem management.
