A Moment of Opportunity: Education, Innovation and Climate Action in Iraq

On 23 July 2025, UNESCO Iraq, in partnership with the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office and the American University of Iraq – Baghdad, organized a special event to watch the broadcast of the UN Secretary-General’s global climate speech and discuss with stakeholders’ challenges and opportunities of climate change in Iraq.

The UN Secretary-General emphasized in his broadcast speech the urgent need for accelerated global efforts to combat climate change by transitioning to clean energy. A UNESCO-led panel discussion with representatives from academia, UN agencies, environmental activists, and the Iraqi Ministry of Environment followed the screening. Speakers addressed Iraq’s climate challenges, the urgency of transitioning to clean energy, and the essential roles of youth, education, and civil society.

Mr. Antony Kar Hung Tam, Chief of Education at UNESCO Iraq, emphasized the power of education and public awareness in driving sustainable climate action and supporting Iraq’s green transformation. He also emphasized UNESCO’s role in combating disinformation relating to climate issues, strengthening integrated water resource management, and facilitating sustainable practices in cultural heritage preservation.
